During times of turmoil or challenge, it’s easy to let difficult moments take over our lives. They can feel heavy, all-encompassing, and never-ending. But this time of year also offers an opportunity to shift our focus—to joy, love, and connection. That’s what I’m choosing to embrace this December.
For many, this is a season of reflection and nostalgia. For those who celebrate Christmas, December often brings memories of baking, wrapping gifts, and gathering with loved ones. But it can also stir up sadness or longing, especially if you’ve experienced loss or unresolved conflicts. The weight of the season, compounded by the challenges this year has brought, can feel overwhelming.
To stay grounded, I turn to self-care—and for me, the most powerful form of self-care is Qigong.
When I take care of myself, my energy shifts. I feel lighter, more connected, and better able to send positive energy to those around me. But here’s the catch: when stress takes hold, self-care is often the first thing to slip. I’ve noticed that stress has crept into my own life recently, and it wasn’t until I slowed down that I realized how it was affecting my mood, my relationships, and even my sleep.
What helps me break that cycle? Gratitude.
Feelings of gratitude can instantly raise your vibration. When I take a moment to notice what I’m grateful for, I reconnect with the good in my life. And the more I share my gratitude, the more it grows. Studies confirm this: grateful people tend to be happier and less stressed, even in difficult times.
According to the Five Element Theory of Chinese Medicine and Spring Forest Qigong teachings, gratitude is especially powerful during the winter season. In this season, the Water Element is at its peak, and its negative emotion—fear—can feel stronger than ever. But gratitude is the antidote. By cultivating gratitude, we not only raise our vibration but also support the health of our kidneys, bladder, and bones—organs closely tied to the Water Element.
December is the perfect time to focus on gratitude.
Nine years ago, I created the Gifts of Gratitude Challenge for the month of December. What began as a simple idea has become a deeply rewarding tradition. Many of you have joined me, and I’m so grateful for your participation. Reading what others are grateful for always brightens my day and lifts my spirits.
Will you join the challenge this year?
The challenge is simple: Find three things you’re grateful for each day from December 1–31.
Here’s how you can participate:
- Post publicly on Facebook: Share your three things daily (this is what gets others involved!) and then share them in our private Facebook group. Use the hashtag #giftsofgratitude2024 to inspire others to join in.
- Use Instagram: Snap a photo representing your gratitude and share it with the hashtag #giftsofgratitude2024. Tag me (@suecritesqigong) so I can see your posts and cheer you on!
- Journal privately: If social media isn’t your thing, write your gratitude down or share it with a trusted friend.
Expressing gratitude is a gift you can give yourself—and the world. Imagine your news feed filled with gratitude instead of stress or complaints. Together, we can create a ripple effect of positivity and raise the collective vibration.
An Invitation to Go Deeper
As I reflect on how gratitude has shaped my life, I’m reminded of the healing power of stepping away from the busyness and reconnecting with yourself and nature. This is the heart of what I’ll be offering at my upcoming retreats in Baja.
- Nature’s Rhythms Retreat (March 4–11, 2025): A chance to align with the rhythms of nature, nurture your energy, and find balance on the tranquil shores of the Sea of Cortez.
- Spring Forest Qigong Level 3 Immersion Retreat (April 1–5, 2025): A transformative experience to deepen your Qigong practice, cultivate advanced healing, and step into a space of calm and clarity.
Both retreats are designed to help you heal, release fear, and raise your vibration. They’re an opportunity to step into a space of rest, renewal, and connection—exactly what so many of us need in challenging times.
If you feel called to take your healing journey further, I encourage you to consider joining us. Healing and peace are always possible, and these retreats are here to support you in finding both.
Let’s Share Gratitude Together
Whether you join the challenge, explore the retreats, or simply take a moment today to notice the good in your life, know that each act of gratitude is a step toward more joy and alignment.
I’d love to hear how gratitude has helped you overcome challenges or brought more light into your life. Share your story in the comments below—I can’t wait to read it.
Here’s to a December filled with happiness, joy, and gratitude. Let’s make it the best one yet!
